Three safeguards helped me keep the experiment from becoming another abandoned self-improvement project.

1. Tie the practice to something already happening. Pair meditation with the first coffee, the morning shower, the kitchen kettle, or sitting down at the desk. The cue should be environmental rather than inspirational. Motivation is volatile. The kettle is less interested in your emotional state. The point is not to make the practice sacred; it is to remove one decision from the morning.

2. Stop measuring by feel alone. Telling another person that you intend to continue can create accountability and make the practice more salient. The default settings on human attention are not broken so much as poorly matched to a world that monetizes interruption. The response is not louder instructions, a more elaborate app, or another promise that discipline will finally become effortless. It is a quiet, slightly boring, occasionally miserable period of noticing where the mind goes—and bringing it back.
